Habarana – Sigiriya to Ella travel by taxi

My Memorable Taxi Journey from Habarana – Sigiriya to Ella with Two European Travelers

Few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of driving two lovely European ladies from Habarana to Ella in my taxi. It was one of those trips that reminded me why I love this job, not just because of the driving, but because of the stories, the scenery, and the connections made along the way.

The Start: Leaving Habarana

We set off early from Habarana, a quiet town surrounded by jungles and lakes. The ladies were excited, they had just come from a safari in Habarana and were eager to see more of Sri Lanka. Instead of rushing straight to Kandy, I decided to take them through Dambulla and Matale, where they could see the real countryside.

The Scenic Detour: Spice Gardens & Paddy Fields

As we drove toward Matale, we passed endless spice gardens, cinnamon, cardamom, and pepper vines everywhere. The ladies had never seen spices growing before, so I slowed down near a few small farms to let them take pictures. Then, we stopped by some emerald-green paddy fields, with farmers working under the sun.

Kandy: Culture & Quick Bites

In Kandy, we visited the Temple of the Tooth Relic, where they were amazed by the golden shrines and the peaceful atmosphere. Afterward, we grabbed some short eats from a local bakery.

The Beautiful Drive to Ella

Most tourists take the Nuwara Eliya route, but I chose Randenigala to Badulla instead. Why? Because it’s quieter, with hidden waterfalls right next to the road. We stopped at a few, some just tiny streams, others big enough to feel the mist. The ladies were thrilled, taking selfies and dipping their hands in the cold water.

The road winds through tea plantations and misty hills, and the whole time, we were chatting, about Sri Lanka, their travels, even European politics! It felt less like a taxi ride and more like a road trip with friends.

Finally, Ella

After nearly 10 hours (with all the stops), we rolled into Ella. They thanked me, not just for the ride, but for showing them the “real Sri Lanka”, not just the tourist spots, but the little things: the smell of spices, the sound of waterfalls, the smiles of villagers.

This is why I drive a taxi. It’s not just about getting from A to B, it’s about the stories, the landscapes, and the people. If you’re looking for a ride with a friendly local driver who knows the best routes and hidden spots, I’d be happy to take you.
