Hiriketiya Beach – Dickwella – Galle to Negombo travel by taxi

From Hiriketiya Beach to Negombo – A Scenic Coastal Taxi Journey

Last February in 2025, I had the pleasure of driving an Italian traveler from Hiriketiya Beach all the way to Negombo, a beautiful coastal route filled with hidden gems, cultural stops, and unforgettable scenery. It was one of those journeys that reminded me why Sri Lanka’s south coast is so special.

Starting Point: The Secret Beauty of Hiriketiya Beach

Our trip began in Hiriketiya, a small, horseshoe-shaped bay near Dickwella that many call “Sri Lanka’s hidden paradise.” Unlike busy tourist beaches, Hiriketiya has a relaxed, bohemian vibe soft golden sand, clear turquoise water, and palm trees swaying in the breeze. My Italian passenger, who had been staying there for a few days, told me it was her favorite spot in Sri Lanka.

Coastal Drive from Hiriketiya to Galle

We left early to make the most of the day, taking the scenic coastal road from Hiriketiya to Galle via Matara. This route hugs the ocean, passing:

  • Dikwella’s peaceful shores

  • Midigama’s surf spots

  • Weligama’s stilt fishermen (a perfect photo stop!)

The Italian lady loved watching the waves crash against the rocks as we drove she kept saying, “This is exactly how I imagined Sri Lanka!”

Exploring Galle Fort & Handloom Magic

In Galle, we made two special stops:

  1. Galle Fort – She wandered through the old Dutch-colonial streets, taking photos of the lighthouse, boutique shops, and charming cafes. The fort’s history and mix of cultures fascinated her.

  1. Sooriya Weaving Mills – Just outside Galle, we visited this handloom factory, where she saw how traditional Sri Lankan fabrics are made. She watched the weavers work and even bought some beautiful handmade sarongs and scarves as souvenirs.

Speeding Up to Negombo on the Expressway

After Galle, we took the Southern Expressway for a smooth, fast drive to Negombo. She relaxed in the car, enjoying the comfort after a day of exploring.

Why This Route is Perfect for Travelers

  • Hidden beach beauty (Hiriketiya is still quiet and untouched)

  • Cultural stops (Galle Fort, handloom factories, fishing villages)

  • Comfortable long-distance travel (Expressway makes it easy)
