Pidurangala Rock – The Best View of Sigiriya for Sunrise Seekers
Just a stone’s throw from the world-famous Sigiriya Lion Rock, Pidurangala Rock offers a different kind of experience, less crowds, more nature, and arguably the best panoramic view in Sri Lanka. A favorite among hikers and photographers, this ancient rock formation combines spiritual significance with breathtaking beauty.
What is Pidurangala Rock?
Pidurangala is a large rock formation located just north of Sigiriya. Unlike Sigiriya, which was once a royal fortress, Pidurangala has long been associated with Buddhist monastic activity. Today, visitors hike to the summit for its unobstructed view of Sigiriya, especially at sunrise.
The trail takes about 30–40 minutes to climb and includes ancient caves, a reclining Buddha statue, and a final scramble over boulders to the top.
The Legend Behind Pidurangala
According to local legend, King Kashyapa moved monks to Pidurangala when he took over Sigiriya to build his fortress. In return, he expanded the Pidurangala monastery, which is why the site remains sacred today.
The name “Pidurangala” comes from Sinhala words meaning “offered pile of gold,” referring to its spiritual value and royal connection.
